Astronomy
Astronomy is the branch of science that deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole. It was discovered in Babylonia and ancient Egypt and later improved upon in the wonderful city of Alexandria. Many ideas were developed in this time that we still use today. For instance, the idea that the Earth is tilted and rotates around the sun is still applied today.
In the TV show Sherlock. some knowledge of astronomy was helpful in order to solve a case. In this specific case, Sherlock Holmes was trying to prove a painting was fake. He did this by pointing out an important star that should have been in the painting. This star went supernova after the painting was created, so it no longer is seen in the sky today. However, it should have been included in the painting when it was not. Therefore, the painting was not the original.

Medicine and Sanitation
In the field of medicine, cleanliness is of the utmost importance. Doctors of all kinds realized this in the Classical world. They would clean their medical instruments and wash their hands after every procedure. Romans especially made leaps and bounds in this area. Sanitation helps prevent infection and the spread of sickness, and keeps the patient healthy.
In an episode of Doctor Who, the Doctor and his companions are trapped in a quarantine facility for victims of a plague. They are constantly sprayed with a sanitation mist that kills all the germs on their bodies. The supervisors of the facility don't want to risk their "guests" being exposed to any outside germs and diseases. Sanitation is the key for their survival.
