The Roman education system did not start out as extordinary as it ended. It gradually evolved into the glorious system we hear about today.
Young childern used to be educated only by their parents. They would learn to read and write in the comfort of their own home. Boys would travel with their fathers when they went away, so as to learn about public affairs and Roman traditions. Girls, however, stayed home and were taught to cook and clean by their mother.
In the third century BC, the education system was changed, due to the conquest of Hellenistic kingdoms and the resulting Greek influence. However, do note that Roman education still remained very different from the Greek practices. It was at this point the Roman education system became more like what we know today. It was at this time, the Roman public schools were established.
Boys of weatlthy families were sent to these schools. However, girls remained at home, though they were sometimes taught by a private tutor. School prepared boys to enter Roman life and obtain well-respected jobs.
Education was very important to the Romans because it showed value of knowlege. It showed that Romans wished to know what was going on in the world. It showed they were a civilized people.
