For the first years of their life, young children would be educated by their parents. This was not changed by the Greek influence. Their parents would teach them the very basics of reading and writing and about Roman tradition and culture. Then, at age seven, boys would start school with a teacher known as the ludi magister. This teacher would build on the bays' basic reading and writing skills and also add some basic arithmetic. He would also teach them some Greek, which was needed in order to be able to function in business life. Girls would continue to be taught at home by their mothers or a private tutor. They would learn how to run a household and perhaps play a musical instrument.
The second stage of schooling for young boys was with a teacher called a grammaticus. He would introduce his students to famous Roman and Greek literature. He would also hone their speaking skills and teach them some basic geography. In the third stage, the teacher was known as a rhetor. He gives his students advanced lessons in literature and trains them how to speak well in public. Public-speaking was a skill needed in Roman times because it earned you great respect.
If the boys parent wished, he could continue with his learning and hirer a specialized teacher to teach him about science and technical subjects. However, most just ended their education with the rhetor.
